2024 05/09

An album of instrumental hip-hop inspired by Madlib, Dilla, and Alchemist. Released under the stage name 'KomanderKOM.'

The title is in reference to my feelings approaching this project. I remember how much I struggled to put a decent beat together back in 2018-2019, and I've come a long way as a musician and as a producer since then. This record is me letting myself stretch my legs creatively, and taking another stab at something I couldn't quite nail previously.

Nearly all instruments featured are homemade, mostly pots and pans. Whatever i could find to hit with drumsticks. This album was recorded and edited single-track; nothing is layered or mixed together. Everything you hear is cut together one directly recorded mono clip at a time.

This was an experiment in stripping extreme music (grindcore most chiefly,) down to the simplest form i could possibly think of. If it's 'noise not music,' why bother sticking with musical instruments? Noise is something that happens all the time, and it requires nothing fancy.

I was so in love with lo-fi black metal that I just had to throw my hat in the ring. This was born from an obsession with finding the most tinny, high frequency, and ear-piercing guitar tone in the genre. I was inspired most by artists of the French scene such as Mütiilation and Vlad Tepes, along with the Neorwegian band, Ulver, and their towering black metal masterpiece "Nattens Madrigal."

I recorded and mixed this tape with a 4-track recorder app on my phone. Every sound went straight into my phone's onboard mic. I'm not a guitarist, so I record my guitar parts by playing a synth through an amp + a couple distortion pedals. I was too self concious to scream in in my dad's basement, so I recored the vocals in a very hot mini-van.

An experiment in genre-fusion, pitting black metal against witch house. Probably the most pop-friendly thing I've made thusfar; this marks the first time I've sang (not screamed) on a public release.

This single includes a less polished b-side as well, which is a cover of White Ring's witch house classic "IxC999." Hearing this song was the moment it clicked for me how this genre fusion could be handled, so covering it felt like a natural place to start.

Fun fact - the bass riff that "Recital" is built on is a sample lifted from progressive rock outfit 'Goblin's' soundtrack for the 1975 Dario Argento movie "Deep Red." Giallo movies, particularly Argento's, were a great point of inspiration for me at the time.

I spent a month listening to nothing but death metal and this was the result. Made in audacity in a week under very strict restrictions.

I was trying to map the riff-heavy, distorted-guitar stylings of extreme metal bands such At The Gates, Strapping Young Lad, and Meshuggah onto my synth-design work in vcv rack. I recorded myself whaling on my practice-pad as well as screaming my lungs out on my cellphone, and put it all together in Audacity.

This marks the end of Subclarity. It isn't really an album, just some leftovers- the last gasp of this creative project.

2019 12/06

My favorite vaporwave album I ever made! Conceptual in that it exclusively samples music made between 2000 and 2011. An experiment in sounds of digital compression paying homage to the age of flip-phone ringtones and sickly-sweet radio pop.

A conceptual vaporwave double-EP about travelling up to heaven (Transmission/) before getting lost and falling into a disturbing liminal place (/Lost.) I had the covers of both albums mashed together into a pretty funky combo-album cover, but check out the induivudal covers by opening induvidual songs on Bandcamp! They're both way better... I mean, the art's part of the experience too, right?

2019 08/27

A conceptual vaporwave album (gee I guess I've done a lot of those, huh?) indirectly telling the story of a breakup. Sort of a stylistic predecessor to "Radio Zones" in that it mostly samples 2000s pop music, although this album has a darker, heavier, and more 'sludgy' sound. Has always stood out to me when looking back over my vaporwave catalogue as a uniquely forlorn, earnest album with a sort of boroquely romantic character about it.

2019 03/30

Fun fact: 'Subclarity' was originally just a psuedonym I created for releasing this album and nothing more. I'd posted all the music I'd made up to that point on a private account, so when I made something I was proud enough of to promote, the alias was born.

My mixing and sonic techinque was really rudimentary when I put this album together, but gee are the samples good! Some of my best sample loops ever. This album is also my Oneohtrix Point Never/Chuck Person envy presenting at its most shameless, to the point where it's more homage than inspired.

2020 11/24

A little EP of remixed hip hop and cloud rap full of movie samples I made for my friends, putting together all our favorite songs and movies to celebrate our inside jokes and shared passions. This was probably also made around when my stoner tendancies peaked and you can hear it, I wanted everything ultra wide and sludgy cuz I was obsessed with how music sounded stoned. If you like psychedelic mixing effects and brainless bangers you should check it out.

All the music I made with modular synths in my sophomore-year winter-quarter of electronic music class. I really enjoyed making music with modular synths, and track 1 - "she has a fever 😢" is probably the most complex/developed song I've made since 2021 so I had to get it out!

Also check out "gate_logic," that one's a banger.

2022 10/06

For so long, I wanted to make loud-ass industrial/electro music, but I kept waiting until I had enough tracks or a sound which was fully realized enough to make an album of it, but that never quite happened as those ambitions slowly morphed into the more subtle, ambient "...& the Valley of Forms." That left all these scraps from 2019 just sittin around! So in late 2022, I put the best stuff together for this little EP. Sure it's old, but these tracks were breakout moments for me in learning how to compose and structure more original music.

Throughout my formative years in music production, I had something of a fixation on becoming capable of making boiler plate trap beats. I guess I saw it as a benchmark of capability in the medium, being able to do something so basic at a passble level. I grew out of it around 2020, but that experience making trap beats did give me a lot of tools to carry over into later projects. This compilation tape of instrumental trap beats is the summation of all that ground-work. As you'd expect, it's not exactly my most inspired project.

2019 03/09

This is a fun one! This was my first full album of vaporwave and it really sounds like it. It stylistically takes after MACINTOSH PLUS or maybe even IACON in how it approaches sampling, totally old-school classic-vaporwave. But going back to this project, I really sense an unfettered curiosity and childlike exhuberence in how I jumped on the genre. There was no high concept or great vision behind this project, I was just getting my feet wet. Even so, it has some musical ideas and techniques which you don't see in my later vaporwave work under the 'Subclarity' name. It's definitely an oddball project in my greater discography.

2019 01/18

2018 was one of the hardest years of my life and, naturally, also when my music was at its rawest, angriest, and most pained. The oddball 'industrial' music I was making in 2018 doesn't quite fit genre description, largely because I didn't know what I was doing. The music is rough and ameturish, but at the same time, it's some of my most expressive and honest work in the medium. Likely the most essential 'quapeow' project.

2018 10/15

Early on in my development as an electronic musician, I took great interest in exploring the boundaries of what music was or what it even could be. Naturally, I ended up listening to a lot of Merzbow and Prurient, any harsh noise music I could get my hands on. This album was my attempt at throwing my hat into the ring. It's probably a bit too long for its own good and I think I made it in less than a week, but it's alright. Oh yeah, it's also technically a concept album. The tracks are supposed to be the soundtrack of some kind of mechanical glass bird melting and falling apart.

2018 05/25

Y'know, I really wish I could say I loved all my art equally because that sounds like some enlightened sh!%, but when I remember projects like 'RED' I can't really bring myself to say it. It's just a three-track single I hastily stuck out into the world because track 1 was the most complex and original piece of music I'd made at the time, I get that I was excited but gee is it hard on the ears. Track 2 embodies the most boring and uninspired elements of my earliest music and track 3 is also just so grating and hard on the ears. Even the title and album art is just lazy and uninspired. I really kicked this thing out the door, huh?

2018 05/16

My first album of music ever!! I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, I didn't even know about the FL Studio playlist feature, I was just recording myself messing around with piano roll loops. Despite how janky the music is, my obsession with making concept albums started real early, so of course this is a concept album about the rapture or end of the world I guess. It has the first, second, AND third impact right there in the track list!! Had I even seen Evangelion at that point...?

The lights are dim and blue. Dahlia stumbles in from stage left wearing a blindfold, aimlessly dragging her feet along as if she was being pulled at the temple by a string.
